Chapter 21

May 3rd Isla Mujeres

Glancing in her rear-view mirror she could see Pedro’s headlights following her. He had insisted that Maricruz and he escort her home. She had grumbled and groused at him, saying she didn’t need babysitters, but he wasn’t going to be dissuaded. He had maintained a consistent distance behind the golf cart all the way from Diego and Cristina’s house to their present location.

“It’s nice to be loved, I guess,” She muttered grumpily to Sparky, “but I really can look after myself.” He leaned companionably against her right shoulder and responded with a sloppy grin that revealed his long velvety tongue. Jessica laughed, “So, who do you agree with? With my babysitters? Or with the person who feeds, walks and loves you?”

He just swished his short wiry tail and gave her bare arm a tentative swipe with his tongue.

“A lick! Wow, you never lick anyone. Thanks, little man, I’m honored.” She laughed at the absurdity of her dialogue with Sparky, or maybe it was only a monologue since he wasn’t actually saying anything.

The food, wine, and time with close friends had helped to lift her spirits and restore her equilibrium. Diego had a wickedly quick sense of humour. The expression on Pedro’s face had been priceless when Diego had asked Carlos about the proposed name for the new restaurant; the No Boobs. The laughter and joking had continued while the group cleared the table and tidied the kitchen.

The affectionate and lengthy goodbyes, goodnights, hugs and kisses eventually ended and everyone dispersed, leaving just Jessica and her babysitters headed to the eastern side of the narrow island.

Turning right onto the double-wide Paseo de Aves, Jessica eased her carrito over a nasty, unmarked tope, a speed bump. When the tope was new it had been painted a glaring yellow. As time passed the paint had disappeared, incrementally removed by thousands of tires and now the tope was an indiscernible driving hazard.

The treacherous tope was very familiar to her, but after dark it was easily forgotten. It was directly in front of a community policing outpost; an unfinished house perched on a dark corner with a pit bull chained to the roof. Until recently the municipal policía had been assigned the task of keeping all the topes on the island refreshed with yellow high-visibility paint, but for some reason this one was seldom painted. She undoubtedly was a source of amusement for the officers stationed inside the spooky building. On more than one occasion she had loudly cursed as her ass was jolted off the seat, and another bolt or fastener flew off her carrito and rattled onto the ground.

But not tonight. She had enjoyed two or maybe it was three glasses of wine with dinner, and didn’t want to draw attention to herself. She quietly drove over the obstacle and continued on her way home. She stopped her vehicle near her front entrance and turned to wave goodnight to Pedro and Maricruz, instead, he parked his Nissan truck and they stepped out.
